60 Martin Place, Sydney

Hassell Architects

The redevelopment of a 1970s office building on the corner of Martin Place and Macquarie Street was driven primarily by permissible building envelopes to protect sunlight into Martin Place and to respect the adjoining presence of the Interwar Gothic style St Stephen’s Church.

The project feasibility required a high level cantilever of the new building into the air space above the Church. GBA Heritage provided guidance on heritage impact mitigation for the design competition building envelope controls, and advocacy for the exceptional award-winning design proposal that created a gentle, corbelled composition high above the Church and the opening of its long-hidden side elevation to public view.
