The future of the large scale carriage works building at the Eveleigh Railway Yards was under considerable threat in the context of the redevelopment of former workshop land on the other side of the railway tracks leading to Redfern and Central Railway stations.
By emphasising the robust and historically interconnected nature of the huge engine and carriage manufacturing workshops and their potential for a wide range of future uses, the short term threats were removed. As opportunities emerged over time, both the Engine and “Carriage Works” buildings have been retained and transformed into major cultural and educational facilities for the population of Sydney.
