The upgrading and revitalising of the distinctive early 20th century Grace Bros Department Store will fully integrate the historic building into the adjoining large scale retail centre. The main centre entry from Broadway will be reconfigured, while retaining and reinstating the fabric and spaces of the original retail function.
GBA Heritage researched the partially lost historic character of the shopfronts, interior spaces and features to provide opportunities for the new design to reintroduce these features into the modern department store context. This was achieved through the production of a Heritage Issues Discussion Paper, a CMP, a SHI and Interpretation Strategy. Ongoing advice to the project team, included the careful identification of heritage fabric to be retained and the remediation of the building façade.
