Heritage Impact Statements

Historic buildings often combine original features and spaces with one or multiple layers of subsequent alterations and additions. At times, these have been designed and built with great care, making them difficult to identify from the original. Alternatively, later additions may now be regarded as intrusive or neutral compared to the original. The fundamental heritage protocol is to focus rejuvenation on the less significant or sensitive aspects of the house, and respect or enhance the fine original features. This can only be achieved when supported by detailed documentary and physical research, usually contained in a Conservation Management Plan or Statement of Heritage Significance. The key role for GBA is to manage heritage impacts as the development strategy and design evolve. We progressively recommend a mix of “avoidance”, “minimisation” and/or “mitigation” methodologies to manage adverse heritage impacts, and potentially achieve positive and creative outcomes. The selection of the correct mix of such actions rests entirely on the historical development, current physical nature and heritage significance of both the place or building and its context.
