The future of this highly distinctive and historically important late 20th century social housing complex, with its “Brutalist” architectural character, was under threat of total demolition and redevelopment under specially formulated draft planning guidelines.
GBA Heritage was requested to review the planning guidelines in the face of widespread public concern about the loss of such an iconic representative of the 1970s “Save The Rocks” campaign.
The advice, supported by a detailed Heritage Assessment concluded additional options should be made available given the importance of the building.
The option of retention and refurbishment, alongside the initial total redevelopment requirement, was incorporated into the final planning guidelines.
The retained and refurbished building is expected to be completed in 2024.
