“Yellow House”, Potts Point

Developer: Philip Bartlett

This fine late 19th century terraced house became an art gallery in the 1950s, before contemporary illustrator Martin Sharp began a collaborative artists’ movement called The Yellow House Artists Collective in the 1970s.  Artists such as Brett Whiteley, George Gittoes, Bruce Goold, Peter Weir, Philip Noyce, Albie Thoms, Aggie Read and more, collaborated and displayed work here ranging from paintings to sculptures, films and interactive art projects. The “Yellow House” itself was always part of the canvas and the fabric of its artistic inspiration.  The Collective changed the face of Potts Point, bringing a more bohemian atmosphere, which has remained to this day.

Although located in an important Heritage Conservation Area, GBA Heritage successfully promoted the repainting of the Macleay Street façade to a bright yellow, as part of its conversion to a residential building, in order to celebrate its bohemian past and its role in modern Australian Art.
